YAP Statistics

YAP provides young people from indigent and low-income families with comprehensive legal representation and advocacy in delinquency and youthful offender cases, as well as, in related disciplinary and administrative proceedings. The following statistics represent the kinds of cases we handle, the age, grade, sex and race of our clients, as well as the neighborhoods in which most of our clients live.

Number and Type of Cases Handled by YAP Attorneys

In 2004-2005, YAP attorneys
handled 838 delinquency and youthful offender cases for a total of 309 children. 468 (52%) of the cases were felony charges, while 291 (38%) were misdemeanors. 79 (10%) of the cases were opened as violations of the terms of probation/parole of previous cases. This does not take into account instances in which children were violated on the terms of their probation on cases in which a YAP attorney handled the original offense.

Race & Ethnicity of YAP Clients

YAP represents children from all racial and ethnic groups from Boston's racially diverse communities. The overrepresentation of children of color in the juvenile justice system and Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) are of utmost concern to YAP. In 2004-2005, 93% of YAP's clients were children of color.

Gender of YAP Clients

YAP represents both boys and girls. In 2004-2005, the overwhelming number of children represented by YAP, 243 (78%), were boys. This number is consistent with previous years and consistent with the ratio of boys to girls in the juvenile court system.
